About XPAT

Some stories feel too improbable to be planned. XPAT is one of them.

Spanning decades, vastly different musical journeys, and a 12,000-kilometer move from South Africa to New Zealand, three musicians unexpectedly crossed paths in the same small suburb of Tawa, just north of Wellington.

The band’s connection runs deeper than standard networking. Frontman and producer Chaz Nielsen brought a rich legacy from the South African scene, having fronted acclaimed acts like HiKaToRi, When Insanity Becomes The Cure, and Because of Betrayal. In Tawa, he connected with bassist Kriss Kadawer, a well-known fixture in extreme metal as the co-founder/guitarist of Kadawer Dialoog and former guitarist for death metal heavyweights BloodBeast. Completing the trio, session veteran Finlay Malherbe, a session veteran who backed iconic acts like Touch of Class and Anton Goosen, realized he had actually shared a stage with a 10-year-old Chaz nearly three decades earlier. Decades later, they unknowingly reconnected in the exact same Kiwi town.

Blending post-grunge, nu-metal, classic rock, and extreme metal, XPAT creates heavy, honest Hard Rock driven by melodic hooks and powerful riffs. Rejecting algorithm-chasing trends, they write real music on their own terms.

Following an explosive debut performance and the release of their single Homeostasis, XPAT is bringing their razor-sharp original sound to Wellington and beyond, proving that three distinct histories can converge to build something undeniable.
